'Foreign resident' in the context of this study indicates a particular civic status, i.e. metoikos as long as the metoikia system survived. This study of the official status of the foreign residents of Athens is divided into three sections. Firstly, there are the obligations towards the state: primarily liability to pay taxes and perform military service. The second section concentrates on the rights that were connected to the public sphere of the life of the polis. The third part of the study is state honours and privileges, that is to say various types of commendations awarded by the assembly by honorary decrees, in return for services rendered to the state. The primary research question throughout the entire study will be the following: was the official status in the Hellenistic period based on contemporary regulations and official practices or merely traditions deriving from the Classical period?
