Academician Georg Henrik von Wright (1916-2003) was an internationally leading analytic philosopher and philosophical logician but also an open-minded bridge-builder between philosophical schools and an inspiring intellectual and cultural personality. His centenary year 2016 was celebrated with several conferences, lecture series, books, and exhibitions in Helsinki, Cambridge, and Cairo. One of the main events was the conference The Human Condition,organized by the Philosophical Society of Finland and the University of Helsinki on 18-20 May 2016.
This volume contains five key note papers and sixteen contributed papers from this conference. It also includes the Georg Henrik von Wright Lectures by Sir Antony Kenny and Cora Diamond. The topics range from the philosophy of mind, Wittgenstein, norms and ethics, human action and causality to philosophical issues on technology and environment. The volume is opened by a so far unpublished essay “On Consciousness” by G.H. von Wright.
