Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003) is perhaps best known for his pioneering results in philosophical logic, his important influence in the development of analytic philosophy, and for his substantial contribution to the investigation, interpretation, and editing of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s literary estate. In addition he made a significant contribution to a number of other fields of academic philosophy, built bridges across different philosophical traditions, and participated actively in public discussion on burning global issues and events. He believed in the power of rational social and cultural debate and challenged people to give up their baseless illusions, participate in discussions, and search together for constructive solutions. In this collection of essays a number of friends, students and colleagues of Georg Henrik von Wright share their personal memories of him as a great thinker and a beloved gentleman.
